There is text in one cell on the updating tool sheet, i need to search the database sheet for matching text and select it. I would prefer to not use an input box if possible because the text is already automatically entered into the first cell on the updating tool sheet.

This is a job for COUNTIF(). The syntax is not complicated, but it is briefly described here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5954557?tstart=0 There are also a number of questions showing how to use it in this SE if you search 'COUNTIF'.

The function you need is CountIf, which takes two parameters: a range of cells and a test condition. Suppose you have a chart of customers and product purchases, and you want to tally what each customer purchased each quarter:

Cell B11 contains the formula COUNTIF(B2:B10,'=Product A') and Cell C12 contains the formula COUNTIF(C2:C10,'=Product B'), etc. Hotkeys for making text smaller mac.

The first parameter is the range of cells you are counting in. The test condition must be enclosed in quotes, and usually you're going to want to specify a comparison operator. For more complex queries like using other cells, etc., you'll want to search Google or Ask Different.

I have a column that can contain cells that have data that is split by a | delimiter. I need to be able to look into each cell and find specific text and if found extract all the text between the |'s.

For example: cell A2 has blue story 1|red tree 2|orange flower 3|green car 4

I want to be able to extract red tree 2 by using the function InStr (If there is a better function please advice!)
